Mathematically, there is no "greatest prime number", because the number of primes is infinite. [1] The largest known Primes per 2008 is 243,112,609 - 1. [2] This number has 12,978,189 digits [1] and is a prime number Mersenne that to-47. M43112609 (thus the notation writing to Mersenne primes-47) was discovered by Edson Smith on August 23, 2008 which is the professors from the University of Central Missouri in cooperation with tens of thousands of other members of the GIMPS project.
